Powerquark unveils next-generation fully integrated buck-boost charger

2026-04-17

Powerquark launches its next-generation fully integrated dual-input, bidirectional synchronous buck-boost charger PQ8984. In forward charging mode, it supports up to 22V input voltage and 5A charging current. In reverse discharging (OTG) mode, it delivers a wide 3V-22V output voltage range and up to 5A output current. The chip is specifically optimized for 2- to 4-cell Li-ion battery applications and adopts Powerquark's proprietary ACOT (Adaptive Constant-On/Off-Time) valley/peak control technology to improve system transient response. It provides a more efficient and flexible charging solution for high-end consumer electronics such as multi-cell tablets, smartphones, drones, smart speakers, POS terminals, and professional medical devices.

Extreme Performance, Higher Efficiency

PQ8984 supports 2- to 4-cell Li-ion battery applications with a wide input voltage range of 3.6V to 22V and charging current up to 5A. It also supports reverse OTG function with an output voltage range of 3V to 22V and output current up to 5A, outperforming competitive solutions.
PQ8984 typical application diagram
The integrated power MOSFETs feature low RDS(on) and optimized on-resistance allocation, significantly improving charging efficiency for 2- to 4-cell batteries. In a typical 12V-to-8V buck scenario, efficiency reaches 93.75% at 4A charging current. In a typical 5V-to-8V boost scenario, efficiency reaches 90.69% at 3A charging current.

Efficiency curve comparison between PQ8984 and competitors in different modes
PQ8984 achieves excellent quiescent power consumption. The typical battery standby current is only 45μA. In ship mode and shutdown mode, quiescent current can be as low as 9μA and 825nA respectively, significantly extending storage and sleep battery life. In addition, the integrated BATFET supports continuous discharge current up to 10A, providing strong support for instantaneous and sustained high-power load operation.
PQ8984 adopts Powerquark's proprietary ACOT buck-boost control technology, achieving smooth mode transitions among buck, buck-boost, and boost operation. Optimized loop compensation further delivers superior load transient response.

Flexible Design, Safe & Reliable

PQ8984 comes in a WLCSP package, integrating four switching power MOSFETs, input current sensing resistor, BATFET for charge path management, and dual-input power path management controller into a single chip. It supports NVDC power path management and offers flexible switching frequency options. In addition to the common 750kHz and 1.5MHz, an additional 1.125MHz switching frequency is available, providing greater flexibility in inductor selection and design trade-offs between efficiency and ripple performance.
PQ8984 supports the BC1.2 charging protocol. Its integrated 11-bit ADC allows users to flexibly monitor voltage and current at input, output and battery. Through the I2C interface, users can also flexibly configure charging/discharging modes, as well as parameters such as charging current, charging voltage, system voltage, reverse output voltage, and current limits.
PQ8984 integrates comprehensive protection mechanisms, including input/output over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), and over-temperature protection (OTP), ensuring reliable device operation.
Additionally, for different application scenarios, Powerquark also offers a QFN package with a more PCB-layout-friendly footprint, as well as functionally customized versions.
